In 2015, a group of students at UNIFEI decided to test an ambitious idea inside a student research project: build a drone capable of flying and making decisions on its own. A few years later, that idea became Black Bee Drones, Latin Americas first academic autonomous drone team. Since then, the team has gone through five editions of IMAV, held in Germany, China, France, Australia and Spain, collecting national and international awards along the way. Beyond the competition results, the teams journey shows how a student project can mature into a recognized technical reference both inside and outside the university.

Making a drone fly on its own takes a lot more than a good motor. At Black Bee Drones, every aircraft goes through four stages of development before it takes off: the physical structure, designed and built by the mechanics team, the circuits and embedded systems assembled by the hardware team, and the software, responsible for turning all of it into real autonomy. That last part is where artificial intelligence comes in: using computer vision, the drone recognizes objects, reads its surroundings and makes flight decisions without human input, whether to map an area, locate a victim in a simulated emergency scenario or carry cargo together with other drones.
